Christ's School Retains National Basketball Title

Christs school under 14 basketball teamChrist's School Under 14 Basketball Team have triumphed at the Dynamik National Schools Basketball Championships for the second year in a row to retain their title as National Champions. This result means Christ's School has the best Under 14 School Basketball Team in England.

Having been victorious in 2017, the Christ’s Team returned this year to defend their title, triumphing over the 3,500 schools from across the country, including specialist basketball academies, independent schools and other state schools, that entered the competition. This represents an amazing achievement for the School, for Richmond Borough and for London as a whole.

In the final against Queen’s School, Christ’s dominated, winning comprehensively with a score of 107-74. Michael Belle received the award for Most Valuable Player, scoring 30 points for the team, but credits his success to the outstanding teamwork on the court, reflecting the core value of the School, “I think our ball movement was great. We’ve been together a long time so we know our own strengths and weaknesses, which enables us to switch things around when we need to”.

Head of PE at Christ's School, Tom Smith said “This win cements Christ’s reputation for excellence in sport and team games. This is an incredible achievement for Christ’s School and one the boys can be hugely proud of. Coach Djamal Sedour has worked tirelessly, with the utmost dedication, to equip the squad with the skills necessary to compete at the top level. This achievement is testament to the ethos of sport at Christ's School, the boys’ hard work in training and our excellent relationship with Richmond Knights Basketball.”

Headteacher Helen Dixon added, “I am incredibly proud of our students. Their commitment to training and to working as part of a team has paid off yet again. They are fantastic ambassadors for our School”.

The squad for the final were Peter Asante, Stephen Asante, Kourie Barnaby, Michael Belle, Kamani Francis, Andre Karabeyekian, Marko Novakovic, Mike Owusu Mantey, Joe Suqi and Ryan Suqi. The team are coached by Djamal Sedour and Andrew Wallace.
