Christ’s School Hosts Environmental Film Premiere

IMG 2256Over 250 students from Christ’s School had the opportunity to join the UK Student Premiere of the environmental film 2040 by Australian Director Damon Gameau.

Students had the opportunity to watch the film in the Christ’s School Drama Hall, and were delighted to welcome the Director, Damon Gameau in person to the School. Following the screening, Damon fielded a diverse range of questions from the enthusiastic audience inspired by the documentary they had just watched, and explained in more detail why he thinks approaching the challenges of climate change with a positive attitude is vital.

The film, which Mr Gameau describes as a visual letter to his young daughter about how the world can be in 2040 when she will be 25 years old, looks at numerous initiatives and technologies which are available now and if embraced can ensure the quality of life for, and longevity of, our planet for generations to come.

The students found the session very inspiring and were uplifted by the film’s positive outlook and Damon’s observations on areas ranging from his recent visit to the UN Climate Change Summit to the future for driverless, electric vehicles, and seaweed farming to sequester carbon from the atmosphere.

The afternoon has given the newly-formed Christ’s School Eco-Group the motivation and enthusiasm to focus their efforts on making the School and their wider community a more environmentally-friendly place. Commenting on the event Christ’s Headteacher, Mrs Helen Dixon, said “the ethos behind our recently established school Eco-Group is to provide our students with a channel to make a positive difference and to help alleviate any potential eco-anxiety. Today’s event has been a wonderful opportunity for our students to see that we can all take action to change things for the better”.
