Sixth Form Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply?

You can apply for the Sixth Form online here. The deadline for applications is 15 January 2021. Once applications close, we will be in touch to invite you to attend an interview with a member of our senior team. Following this, offers will be made to all eligible students. Offers are conditional on students meeting our entrance requirements and receiving the required grades at GCSE for the subjects they wish to study at A level.

What are the entrance criteria?

You can find details of our entrance criteria here.

Which subjects do you offer at A Level?

We offer a wide variety of subjects at both A Level and we currently offer BTEC Business Studies and Performing Arts. Details of each subject and the syllabus can be found here.

How many external students do you have?

External students usually make up 10-15% of our intake so there will always be students in the same boat as you if you are joining from another school. We are exceptionally proud of the calibre of students we have attracted from other schools this year, with most of them citing the smaller class sizes, welcoming atmosphere, and the personalised level of support and challenge available.

What enrichment do you offer?

We have a fantastic programme of enrichment opportunities for our students, from Debate Society, to completing MOOCs, Sport and Fitness, Journalism and Theatre. You can find out more here.

Can you let me know where your students progress to after leaving Christ’s?

We have an excellent track record in helping our students to secure places at top universities. In 2020, 95% of Christ's Sixth Form students gained a place in Higher Education, with our ‘Oxbridge Plus’ pathway enabling a record 46% to achieve places at top 'Russell Group' universities, including one student who gained a place to study engineering at Oxford. We were also delighted to place our first student on a Level 7 Masters Apprenticeship with Ernst Young, the top accountancy firm. To view our alumni destinations in detail, please click here.

Where can I see your latest A Level Results?

Click here to view a detailed breakdown of our 2020 results and those for previous years.

Do you offer an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)?

Yes, students are offered the opportunity to sign up to an EPQ in the summer term of year 12. This is timetabled for these students in year 13.

How often do you assess students?

There are five assessment weeks during year 12 culminating in full end of year internal mock exams. Students receive reports with their assessment week grade, effort score, and from assessment week 3 they will receive their target grade and a prediction.

Can students continue into year 13 with low grades?

Yes, but students must achieve at least an E grade (or Pass in BTECs) in their end of year exams in order to progress to year 13. No student will have a target grade of less than a C if they have the entry criteria for the Sixth Form.

Can you leave the school site when you have free periods, e.g. to take driving lessons?

Students may sign out during lunchtime but may not book driving lessons or make other optional appointments during the school day.

What is the study pass?

Students are able to gain a ‘study pass’ after Easter in year 12 if attendance, effort and attainment grades are above a certain threshold. This allows students the flexibility to study from home during independent study where it is helpful to do so.

Is there a canteen for Sixth Form students?

Yes, students have exclusive access to a cafe during break and lunch, and also have a kitchen area equipped with a hot water point, microwaves, and a coffee machine.

I receive learning support at my current school. Is this something you offer at Christ’s Sixth Form?

Students do not receive in class learning support, but if they received concessions like extra time or working on a laptop these continue into Sixth form. Whether students have target grades of C or A* teaching will also be differentiated to stretch and challenge as appropriate, for example through ‘Aiming A* thinking hard’ strategies or providing writing frames as students learn to construct A Level standard essays.

What size are your classes and what level of support students get from their form tutor?

Class sizes range from around 4 up to our largest class sizes of 24 for Maths. The typical class size is 10, which is optimal for delivering the level of personalised learning that we offer. Form tutors provide an academic mentor role to students and can help with any support the student might need.

How many A levels can you choose to study?

We encourage students to study three subjects, but around 10% choose to study four A Level subjects, generally when adding Further Maths to their options.

What IT provision is given to students?

From 2021 students will be expected to provide their own laptop/ chromebook, with the opportunity to lease a chromebook from the School. We have an upgraded wi-fi service so students are able to choose where they sit and work during independent and guided study. There will also be some PCs in the main study room as well as a suite of Chromebooks available to book.

Where can I find out more about a specific subject I'm interested in studying?

We would encourage you to contact staff directly to discuss and queries regarding subjects you are interested in studying. a full staff list, by department, can be found here.
