2018/19 Admissions Arrangements

Admissions Arrangements for 2018-19

We have now consulted on our admissions policy for 2018/19, and this report represents the outcome of the consultation, which ran from 16 November 2016 until 22 January 2017. We invited the following recipients to participate:

  • Parents, Staff and Governors of Christ’s School
  • Local Authorities in Richmond and Kingston and surrounding boroughs
  • Governing bodies at all maintained primary and secondary schools in Richmond and Kingston
  • Southwark Diocesan Board of Education

We consulted regarding the following changes:

  1. In order to reflect the diverse faith of applicants to Christ’s School, the Governing Body propose to expand our Foundation criteria to include families who are committed members of a church within the UK and Ireland through the addition of the body Churches Together in Britain and Ireland, and overseas churchgoers with the addition of The Anglican Communion (worldwide). These changes can be found in sections 3.1 and 3.4.
  1. The Governing Body also propose to add a new criterion for children of staff. This change is being made following requests from staff. This addition can be found in sections 3.4, 4.4 and 5.2 and in the Notes of Guidance, Note 4.
  1. In accordance with Section 1.9 of the School Admissions Code, issued by the Department for Education, the Governing Body has removed criterion 4.4 from the 2017-18 Admissions Policy - children who attend a primary school within 3.5km of the School by the shortest route by road and publicly maintained footpath as measured by the local authority.
  1. In order to clarify the process for Admission to Other Year Groups, the Governing Body has proposed the addition of Section 7.

Consultees were invited to send us their comments on the proposed, and a copy of the full proposed 2018/19 policy was published on our website throughout the consultation period.

Outcome

The Governing Body at Christ’s School would like to communicate the outcome of the recent consultation. Details of the changes made can be found below and a copy of our determined Admissions Arrangements for 2018/19 is attached.

Home to School Distance Measurement

Sections 2.3 and 9 have been amended to clarify the method used by the local authority to calculate home to school distance. Full details can be found in the Notes of Guidance, Note 9.

Inclusion of UK and Overseas Churches

Sections 3.1 and 3.4 have been amended. In order to reflect the diverse faith of applicants to Christ’s School, the Governing Body has expanded our Foundation criteria to include families who are committed members of a church within the UK and Ireland through the addition of the body Churches Together in Britain and Ireland, and overseas churchgoers with the addition of The Anglican Communion (worldwide).

Update to Deaneries List

In response to feedback Section 3.5 was updated to provide an accurate list of churches within the Hounslow Deanery.

Children of Staff

Sections 3.4, 4.1 and 5.2 have been updated to include a new criterion for children of staff. This change has been made to bring Christ’s School into line with other schools in Richmond Borough, following requests from staff. Details can be found in the Notes of Guidance, Note 4.

Compliance with the Schools Admissions Code

In accordance with Section 1.9 of the School Admissions Code, issued by the Department for Education, the Governing Body has removed criterion 4.1.4 from the Admissions Policy - children who attend a primary school within 3.5km of the School by the shortest route by road and publicly maintained footpath as measured by the local authority.

The Governing Body received a number of responses in response to this proposal. Whilst recognising that Christ’s School needs to adhere to the School Admissions Code, the majority of respondents did not support this change and have urged Christ’s to find an alternative solution to ensure that children attending local primary schools are prioritised in the oversubscription criteria.

The Governors at Christ’s recognise the importance of the School as a local, community school within Richmond and Kew, and are exploring potential solutions, including the possibility of adding a new feeder school criterion, for our Open applicants in 2019/20.

We were unable to action further changes for 2018/19 as there was insufficient time for a further consultation. We plan consult again for Admissions into the School from 2019/20.

Admission to Other Year Groups

A new section, Section 7 has been added in order to clarify the process for Admission to Other Year Groups within Christ’s School.

Management of Waiting Lists

Section 8 has been updated to clarify how long applicants will remain on the waiting list and how late applicants are managed.
