Christ's School Choral and Orchestral Concert on Saturday 6th July

Christ’s School will be hosting our biennial choral and orchestral concert in Richmond on 6 July at 7:30pm in St Mary Magdalene Church, Richmond. The concert will consist of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, concerto performances by two of our most able instrumentalists and two orchestral compositions by young composers at Christ’s.

We are very proud to host these concerts, of which this is the fourth, which are open to the general public and feature a large-scale choral work.  This year the concert also features newly composed works by two of our own talented young composers - Max Manning wrote his piece for the north-London-based Nonesuch string orchestra, with whom we collaborated in the Spring of this year to host a young composers’ workshop involving composers from a number of local secondary schools.  Jacob Cavendish also wrote a wonderful piece for strings for the Nonesuch orchestra, but has chosen to write a second piece for the available forces we have for the present concert, including woodwind, brass and percussion.

Daniel Murray, our young trombonist, will play the Concerto for Trombone by Rimsky-Korsakov; originally written for trombone and military band, Christ’s school’s director of music Philip Wilson has arranged the piece with an orchestral accompaniment.  This piece definitely deserves a wider reputation!   Ines Gil Fonfria, our cellist, will play the justly well-known and fiery Allegro Appassionato by Saint-Saens.

Christ’s school and community choir brings together students, parents and friends of the school. Our orchestra consists of some of Christ’s most talented together with young professional players who are students at London conservatoires and elsewhere.

The mission of our choral and orchestral concert series is to bring together the school, the wider community and professionals to produce a unique experience which will enrich the musical experience of our students, as well as contributing significantly to the musical life of the area.

Previous concerts have featured Vivaldi’s Gloria, Sir Karl Jenkins Songs of Sanctuary (which resulted in an invitation to sing the work in the Carnegie Hall, New York, in the presence of the composer) and Fauré’s Requiem.  The full programme for 6th July is:

Saint-Saens           Allegro Appassionato for Cello and Orchestra (solo Ines Gil Fonfria)

Rimsky-Korsakov   Concerto for trombone (new orchestration)

Jacob Cavendish   Newly written composition

Max Manning         Slow Dance in A minor

Orff                         Carmina Burana

Tickets are available for parents to buy via Scopay (£12, £6 concessions). Anyone not directly connected with the school wishing to buy tickets should email Mr Wilson.
